Dear Hutchinson School Families,

The end of the school year brings many celebratory events. From spring concerts and performances, field trips, STEAM Day and Move-Up ceremonies, there are many ways that students get a chance to demonstrate all that they have learned. This coming week, there are two events in particular that will showcase our students. The first is our Spring Concert on Monday, May 22nd at 6:30 pm in the Prospect Hill Auditorium and our second is our STEAM Day on May 23rd. To learn more about how you can celebrate with us, please see the information below.

Best wishes for a fantastic week ahead and a Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

Sincerely,

~Trisha

School News…

Schools Closed:

School will be closed on Thursday, May 25th through Monday, May 29th in observance of Memorial Day. School will reopen on Tuesday, May 30th.

4th & 5th Grade Spring Concert:

Our 4th & 5th Grade Spring Concert will be taking place on Monday, May 22nd at 6:30 pm in the Prospect Hill School auditorium. We look forward to seeing you at the show!

Join Us For STEAM Day!

On May 23, 2023, students will be showcasing their STEAM projects for families. Our science learning standards in New York State (NYSSLS) place a heavy emphasis on having students design solutions to problems they identify.  Therefore, for STEAM Day this year, students are working to design something that can be made easier or better with a new idea or invention using recycled materials. The process that students go through is inquiry based, student centered, and rooted in the design and engineering process.  The theme/question is intentionally open-ended to allow for creativity and ingenuity in both identifying a problem and then designing a solution. We are looking forward to seeing you in-person on May 23rd at 2:15 pm. All visitors will need to enter through our main entrance before heading to their child’s classroom.

Livestream STEAM Day:

For families who are not able to join us in-person for STEAM Day on May 23rd, we will have a livestream option that morning! Please use the following Google Meet link to join in on the fun: https://meet.google.com/mbb-buzf-jvc

A couple of tips to keep in mind if livestreaming the event:

  • For a better viewing experience, "pin" the screen. Tap the participant or presentation tile. At bottom right of the tile, tap Menu . From the pop-up menu, tap the Pin.
  • The approximate schedule for when grade levels will be livestreamed is as follows:

  • 9:20-10:05- 1st Grade

Class Placement:

It’s hard to believe that we are coming to the end of the school year and already beginning to plan for next year. The faculty and I work carefully to make thoughtful, well-considered placements for each and every child.  Our goal is to form classroom communities that are balanced across many indicators such as student learning styles, academic profile, social and emotional development, age and individual developmental issues, cultural diversity, peer interactions, special needs, and teacher-student relationships. It is fair to say that not all of the criteria indicated receive equal weight or consideration in our decision making. While the composite criteria may seem to be important, some criteria may have to be emphasized over others. Due to the complexity of this process, we will not accept any requests for specific teachers since this would compromise our ability to create balanced classes.  In addition, your child may or may not have the same teacher as her or his brother or sister. We consider each child's individual needs in making our decisions. We ask that you please support our faculty who work closely together to make thoughtful, well-considered placements for each and every child.  We are very fortunate to have such a strong teaching staff in our school, and we look forward to your child having a successful, happy year. If you would like to share any pertinent information that will help us in the placement process please email me by Friday, May 19th.

If you are a current 2nd grade parent, and would like your child to learn to play the violin, viola, cello or bass at school in the 3rd grade, enrollment is now OPEN. To learn more about our program, please see the following link: Orchestra Program Overview
